Recordkeeping Metadata Project

Australian Recordkeeping Metadata Schema Release Version 1.00

Australian Standard

In March 1999, IT 21, the Standards Australia Committee on Records Management, formally adopted work on the development of a framework metadata standard for recordkeeping based on the RKMS. The ACA/ASA Committee on Descriptive Standards has been constituted as a Standards Australia sub-committee (IT 21/7 - Recordkeeping Metadata).

With impetus from the collective of Australian Archival Institutuions (CARA) in 2003, community demand for a unified set of recordkeeping elements solidified. This work is now being aggressively pursued with a common Australian recordkeeping metadata scheme anticipated by 2005. Implementation guidelines will form an important and on going component of the work. For further details.

RECORDKEEPING METADATA: Information and Briefing Session

5 November 2004, Melbourne

Australia has been at the forefront of recordkeeping metadata developments, with standards available for nearly 7 years. Yet implementation has been slow and recordkeeping metadata is not generally understood.

The aim of this seminar was to provide participants with an up-to-date briefing on recordkeeping metadata initiatives being undertaken in various areas and jurisdictions, both internationally and locally, including barriers to adoption, community building initiatives, standards setting work and the latest research.

Briefings included the work being undertaken in the International Standards Organisation, the international collaborative research project InterPARES and Standards Australia. Implementation experience from the UK Public Record Office, the National Archives of Australia and Public Record Office of Victoria, all involved in these initiatives, further briefed participants on the recordkeeping metadata development work, uptake and implementation issues being faced in specific jurisdictions.

Speakers included:

  • Hans Hofman, National Archives of the Netherlands; Chair of the ISO working group on Recordkeeping Metadata. Presentation
  • Malcolm Todd, National Archives UK; responsible for the National Archives metadata initiatives Presentation
  • Prof. Sue McKemmish, Professor of Archival Systems, Monash University and joint chair of the Description Domain in the InterPARES project Presentation
  • Barbara Reed, Chair of the Australian Standards sub committee on Recordkeeping Metadata Presentation
  • Joanne Evans and Karuna Bhoday, Researchers, Clever Recordkeeping Metadata Project, SIMS Monash Presentation
  • Adrian Cunningham, National Archives of Australia
