About Archives: Recordkeeping in Society

“There is no area of human activity not shaped in the most fundamental ways by the archival storage of information and no continuing form of culture or community is possible without it.”

This book explores the role of archives in various cultural, organisational and historical contexts and introduces established and emerging concepts in archival science. It sets the concepts of the trace, documents, record, archive and archives within the conceptual framework of the records continuum and explores themes including archival institutions, the recordkeeping profession, the relationship between evidence and memory in archival discourse, accountability, and societal and juridical power.
