Abstract: Communication and Cultural Resistance: Formulating a Knowledge Management Strategy in a Public Sector Organization

Most organizations face difficulties in overcoming cultural resistance when it comes to the implementation of knowledge management. Many believe that the key to successful implementation of knowledge management program is to socialize the knowledge management concept so as to eliminate misconceptions and thereafter, to guide the implementation of the knowledge management process in the proper context. The first step in this process is to focus on changing the mindsets and help people comprehends the need for knowledge management in the organization. Conversely, insufficient buy-in from the senior management, lack of interest and participation would be the key adverse factors that hinder the progress of the KM process. This study reports on the formulation of communication strategy to counter any cultural negativity against change and be used as a tool to solicit maximum buy-in and support from the senior management and staff in the organisation. Focus group discussions, interviews and observations were used to formulate the communication strategy and evaluate its usefulness for both staff and senior management within the organisation.

Abstract : Some Observations Concerning Knowledge Management Issues in the Medical Industry

The purpose of this paper is to explore certain issues of knowledge management in the medical industry in US. We discuss models of a medical knowledge management system designed by Kaiser Permanente and the Care Group that are in use as clinical information systems. We consider relationships grid created by clinical information systems and possible research questions the analysis of this grid may generate. We ponder problems in healthcare delivery for rural communities in US, and consider solutions offered by the telemedicine systems. The Telehealth Ida service program, under development for rural Idaho, serves as an example of such system.
