Aims |
|
The
Australian Trade Union Heritage Gateway project aimed
to remedy a significant gap in scholarly research infrastructure
for unions and industrial relations by developing the
first nationally accessible Web gateway to archival
resources relating to Australian trade unions. The project
also aimed to test emerging Australian and international
archival metadata standards for resource discovery and
publication on the Web.

Overview |
|
Archival
records of trade unions in Australia are scattered
between a number of university archives, state libraries
and state archives. This project arose out of a recognition
that there is no central access point to the information
about these collections, and that those access points
which are available to researchers lack the contextual
detail necessary to fully understand the records.
The
project therefore sought to develop a database of
structured data about Australia's trade unions and
their archival records and to establish a web based
'front end' gateway providing online browse and search
facilities.
Information
about trade unions and their archival records was
initially gathered from Parties to the Award: a guide
to the pedigrees and archival records of federally
registered trade unions, employer associations and
their peak councils in Australia, 1904-1994 (published
by Noel Butlin Archives Centre, ANU in 1994). Over
time, the database will also incorporate information
gathered by archivists working with state and regional
trades hall councils, industrial registries and other
libraries and archives which hold trade union records.
