Decision Support in the New Millennium

Tutorials and Workshops

TUTORIAL 1:

Performance Support Systems

If today's organisations are to remain competitive, they have to ensure that their members are able to perform their current job tasks at proficiency levels and adapt to rapidly changing external environments. Information technology in the form of Performance Support Systems (PSS) is proposed as a way to reach this challenging objective of providing "just in time" and "at the right place" learning and support to ensure continuous performance improvement. This tutorial presents the newest concept of PSS and the challenges in their design for commercial delivery, as proposed by J. Rokhart in 1997 seminar on emerging technologies (MIT). Some application areas for PSS will be also discussed, in particular quality, knowledge and project management.

Speakers:

  • Prof. Jacques Ajenstat - Professor, University of Quebec, Montreal,
  • Jaime Benchimol - Executive at Systemcorp Inc.

TUTORIAL 2:

Decision Support Systems in Medical Information Systems

Automated reasoning and decision support for medicine is a challenging (and sometimes) elusive goal. Its pursuit frequently presses the boundaries of decision and computer science. This tutorial will overview the theory, state of practice, and vision of the future of decision support as applied in health. Topics will include belief network and fuzzy logic for reasoning in health, as well as demonstration of medical DSS tools.

Speakers:

  • Malcolm Pradhan - Director of Health Informatics, University of South Australia.
  • Jim Warren - Director, Health Informatics Research Group, University of South Australia.
  • Gleb Beliakov - School of Computing and Mathematics, Deakin University, Australia.

TUTORIAL 3:

Knowledge Discovery to provide Intelligent Decision Support

In this tutorial we investigate how to use knowledge discovery from databases to provide intelligent decision support systems. Topics discussed include: reasoning from cases - the use of rule-based reasoning, case-based reasoning and fuzzy reasoning; an overview of data mining and knowledge discovery; classifying knowledge discovery domains; applications of KDD in law, management and biology; using KDD to support negotiation and the exercise of discretion.

Speaker:

  • John Zeleznikow - Senior Lecturer, Department of Computer Science, La Trobe University, Australia.

TUTORIAL 4:

Negotiation and Conflict Resolution: A Decision Support Perspective

This tutorial offers a comprehensive discussion of negotiation from an operational perspective, and presents various possibilities to design DSS to support conflict resolution. It next deals with issues related to the design, implementation, use and evaluation of negotiation support systems (NSS) in business. The tutorial will also cover topics related to (i) human and artificial negotiation, agents environmental negotiation, (ii) intercultural negotiation, (iii) Internet-based NSS and the effectiveness of NSS use. Tutorial participants will also have the opportunity to use NEGOTIATOR, a multi-attribute negotiation support system.

Co-ordinator:

  • Tung Bui - Distinguished Professor, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu.

TUTORIAL 5:

Activity Theory: A framework for the study of information systems that support managerial decision making

This tutorial will introduce attendees to Activity Theory, providing a description of the theory as it applies to the use of information systems in organisations to support managerial decision making. An Activity Theory approach takes a whole "activity" as a core point of departure for any kind of human endeavour. The main strength of an Activity Theory approach to information systems is its concepts of tool mediation with an emphasis on the "activity" in a social context.

Co-ordinator:

  • Helen Hasan - Senior Lecturer, Department of Business Systems, University of Wollongong, Australia.
